There are basically three types of search engines:
Those that are powered by robots (called crawlers; ants or spiders)
Those that are powered by human submissions
Those that are a hybrid of the two.
Crawler-based search engines are those that use automated software agents (called crawlers) that visit a Web site, read the information on the actual site, read the site's meta tags and also follow the links that the site connects to performing indexing on all linked Web sites as well. The crawler returns all that information back to a central depository, where the data is indexed. The crawler will periodically return to the sites to check for any information that has changed. The frequency with which this happens is determined by the administrators of the search engine.
Human-powered search engines rely on humans to submit information that is subsequently indexed and catalogued. Only information that is submitted is put into the index.
I cover only the Crawler-based search engines (E.g Google, yahoo,MSN, etc)
Knowing how a search engines work, there are 3 IMPORTANT factors that unfluence your search engine ranking. they are :
Link popularity
Keyword density
Meta tags (Dying out)
From all the "keyword density" is the one you can DIRECTY influence.
2. What is Link popularity (Aka LP)?
The theory goes something like this: The search engine Powers That Be have decided that if other sites are linking to your site, it must be a winner; therefore, it deserves a boost in rankings (when all else is equal). If you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. People link to good sites, not bad ones.
My favorite way to get links (but the most time-consuming) is to simply have the best site on the Internet in your specific niche. Interestingly enough, if your site is well written, provides tons of useful information and is constantly updated, you often won't have to seek out links at all. Other sites will link to yours of their own volition.
An alternative will be to add you
site to a link exchange directory.

This concept of link exchange will get you
higher in the search ratings and get you more visitors.

3. All about keyword density.
Keyword density is not as straight forward a technique as it sounds. Keyword placements and recurrence within your web articles are very important factors in search engine optimization. This is so that search engines will notice your keywords and your web page will come up tops whenever a web surfer searches for your keyword or keyword phrase.
You should consciously maintain a good balance of keywords or search phrases in all your web articles. This is because over-repetition of your keywords will send an alert to search engines that will then classify your article as being 'stuffed' with keywords. This is known as "keyword stuffing" where a search engine thinks that you are trying to deceive it into giving you a high ranking for your article with the over-concentration of your keywords. Once a search engine marks your article as penalized, this could have an adverse on your web site's ranking.
Keyword density refers to the number of times your keyword or search phrase is found in your article. A percentage is the easiest method of quantifying the number of times a keyword should appear (technically) in an article. You will find countless recommendations on how much keyword density you should maintain in your articles. However, the final decision is yours to make; you must decide what density is more beneficial for your articles and your web site.
Using the links below try to make sure your site has a density between 2% and 7%, and remember above that is considered keyword clouding.

Choosing the right keyword density will guarantee you high rankings on search engines and this will lead to increased web traffic, greater online sales and ultimately, monetary rewards. Give yourself room for trial and error in determining the right degree of concentration of keywords or phrases for your articles. As long as you find yourself rising in the ranks of search engines and earning an improved profit, you know that you are on the right track with your keyword density. Remember, do not make the grave mistake of over repetition and you will do just fine.
3. Meta TAGS.
A special HTML tag (Not visible on the browser) that provides information about a Web page. Unlike normal HTML tags, meta tags do not affect how the page is displayed. Instead, they provide information such as who created the page, how often it is updated, what the page is about, and which keywords represent the page's content. Some search engines still use this information when building their site.
Below the link the generate your own META TAG easily.
However, I must also add that google, stopped using the META tags.

4. Website submission
So .....
Knowing all about META TAGS, Keywords, and Linking ...you still need to submit your site.
What good is your site, if you do not add it to the search engines.
